If you’re like me, thinking about the seemingly endless problems facing the world today quickly starts to feel overwhelming. It can feel like there’s nothing you can do, especially if you don’t have tons of disposable income to give away. (And let’s face it, most of us are not and will never be billionaire philanthropists.) This is even tougher considering many of us are currently unable to leave our homes for more than the basic necessities. Fortunately, though, it’s easier than ever to make a difference without pulling out your credit card or leaving your couch. Here are five ways you can help people in need from the comfort of your home—you don’t even need to change out of pajamas!
Want to perform a small act of kindness that will have big consequences? Help the World Food Programme (WFP) continue to save and change lives around the world with Freerice. Freerice is a simple game: You answer questions, and for every correct answer, you generate an ad. And when an ad appears on your screen, you trigger a payment to the World Food Programme. All funds generated through Freerice go toward WFP projects around the world and benefit people who need it the most. It’s an easy way to help children in need, and the game is surprisingly addicting to play.
BeanBeanBean is similar to Freerice. You answer questions to collect “beans.” After getting a number of questions correct, you can then donate the beans you’ve earned. Your beans are then converted to a dollar amount, and that dollar amount is donated to US-based food aid charities. Because charities can purchase food at wholesale prices, they’re able to make the most of each dollar. (For example, Feeding America can purchase 10 meals for just $1!)
Donate a Photo
This Johnson & Johnson initiative allows people to make a difference simply by taking a photo. Just download the Donate a Photo app and share a photo—Johnson & Johnson will donate $1 to a good cause. You can share one photo per day, and the subject can be whatever you want. Plus, you choose the cause that your dollar goes toward. It’s an easy way to support causes like women’s health, education and equality, emergency relief, and global disease challenges.
Charity Miles is a free fitness app available for smart devices. When you download it, you can choose from tons of different causes to support, like ASPCA, Alzheimer’s Association, Wounded Warrior Project, and tons more. Once your app is set up, all you have to do is log your movement, whether you’re running, walking, biking, or even just dancing. Charity Miles’ sponsors then make donations based on the number of miles logged for each charity. You stay active while supporting a great cause and everybody wins!
This is maybe the easiest item on our list—you don’t even have to download anything or play any games. AmazonSmile is the same exact thing as Amazon.com, except that any time you shop through Smile.Amazon.com, a portion of your purchase goes toward a charitable organization of your choice. That’s right! Just doing your normal, everyday shopping can help generate small donations for your favorite charities.
