When much of the holiday season is focused on shopping and buying, the last thing you probably want to do is shop even more. Still, after-Christmas sales are enticing, often because they offer deep discounts on certain items.
But not everything is worth the effort it takes to shop. If you’re not sure whether the sales will be worth getting off your couch for, consider whether there are items you actually need.
You’ll also have to decide if you want to compromise. You’ll pay more before the holidays, but the items you want aren’t as likely to be sold out. Plus, many electronics get design refreshes in the new year.
However, if those are tradeoffs you can live with, here are the best things to shop for in post-holiday sales.
By the end of December, winter has just gotten started in many parts of the United States. But in January, retailers begin to turn over their merchandise for the next season. This makes January a great time to take advantage of steep discounts on winter gear. With this in mind, post-holidays are a great time to stock up on decorations. You may not get to see it for another year, but you’ll pay bottom-dollar prices.
Like cars, electronics get frequent refreshes. While Black Friday and Cyber Monday offer great deals, if you can be patient until January, you may be able to get some great discounts. Old models are on the way out, and retailers are ready to get rid of them at lower-than-normal prices.
You know how people say to buy Halloween candy the day after Halloween? Well, the same applies here. After the holidays, retailers put tons of toys, books, and movies on sale. They’re also trying to clear out stock of holiday gift sets, which means you can usually get things like cosmetic gift sets at a steep discount.
Demand for fitness items actually goes up after the holidays thanks to New Year’s resolutions. With that in mind, retailers put these items on sale to encourage customers to buy. Or take advantage of the fitness resale market. By May or June, when people realize their resolutions aren’t reality, they’ll resell gently used equipment at a great discount.
Once the holiday feasts have ended, you can easily get things like seasonal items, wines, baking supplies, and more at lower prices. Even retailers aren’t immune to the health crazes that seem to hit every January, and they’ll try to get rid of older stock.
