6 Simple Strategies for Practicing Self-Care

Over the past few years, you may have heard about the rise of something called self-care. While it’s often associated with superficial Millennials using bath bombs, self-care is actually an important component of health and wellness. The most important aspects of self-care are taking steps to improve your physical and mental health. So for some, this may involve a luxurious bath to improve your mood, but that isn’t all it should involve.

The first step to practicing self-care is simply setting aside time for yourself. It might sound obvious, but prioritizing yourself is always, well, a top priority. Here are some additional strategies to try. You may not use all of them, but figuring out which ones benefit you most and incorporating them into your routine can give your overall well-being a serious boost.

1. Get good sleep.

What does your nighttime routine look like? Do you often stay up late or fall asleep with the television on? Whether you realize it or not, things can all cause extra stress on your body, leading to less restful sleep. 

2. Take care of your gut.

Your gut is home to trillions of microbes, which are necessary for all kinds of things, like nutrition and immunity. What you eat affects your microbiome, which can be good or bad. Try to maintain a healthy diet and eat probiotic foods to nourish your microbiome.

3. Stay active.

Daily exercise isn’t just good for you physically. It also gives you a mental boost and helps reduce stress and anxiety. You don’t need a lot to start reaping the benefits, either. Just 30 minutes of moderate activity five days a week is enough to start feeling the effects. You might even feel better after one session of walking or aerobics!

4. Cook yourself a meal. 

If it has been a while since your last home-cooked meal, you might want to try this ideal! Quick meals like premade microwave meals and fast food are convenient. However, making yourself a healthy, delicious meal at home is a great way to practice self-care.

5. Organize your home.

If you’re like me, messy surroundings start to take a toll on you. Keeping your home tidy can improve your mood, and keeping a calendar helps you stay on top of important appointments and events. If you’re still working, organizing your workspace can have the additional benefit of helping you focus.

6. Shake up your routine.

Scheduling regular time to get away from your day-to-day routine helps you disconnect. Taking a walk or going somewhere you normally wouldn’t are two simple ways to achieve this. You can also take a day trip or simply silence your phone and enjoy a good book outside. Each of these things are a simple way to feel relaxed and rejuvenated.
