Thanks to the internet, it’s easier than ever to decide you want something and have it show up on your doorstep within the week. But after a while, those shipping costs start to add up! When you’re already spending your hard-earned cash, shipping charges can be tough to swallow. Though order minimums may guarantee you free shipping, not every store offers these. Plus, it still costs companies money to send packages. Fortunately, though, there are some simple ways to save money on shipping charges.
Get the app.
Some retailers offer free shipping to customers who place orders through their apps. If you haven’t downloaded your favorite store’s app yet, you may be able to get free shipping or another discount code just for downloading it on your tablet or smartphone.
Use a separate email just for newsletters.
If your email inbox looks like mine, you have tons of promotional emails cluttering up your inbox and making it hard to find the important stuff and those promo codes you thought you saw. Instead, you can make a separate email for your household, and just use that new email to sign up for first-time shopper discounts next time you buy online.
If you have an Amazon Alexa device, you can use it to get around Amazon’s add-on minimum. Certain items are only available if your purchase totals $25. However, if you set up voice purchasing on your smartphone and ask Alexa to order the item you need, you won’t have to meet the $25 minimum. Just make sure you have a payment method set up for voice orders!
Join loyalty clubs and membership programs.
Though there are some memberships you have to pay to join, some companies offer loyalty programs totally free. So while you may not want to shell out for an Amazon Prime subscription, Nike+, Columbia Sportswear, and Staples Rewards members get free shipping with no or low order minimums. For other subscription programs, you can always see if the company offers a free trial. That way you can use the service for a week or two and decide if you like it enough to pay for it–or simply cancel before the trial period ends.
Ship it to the store instead.
This may not be the most convenient option. However, a number of companies will ship your item to a local store for free. As long as you have a store nearby, you can then pick it up without worrying about shipping charges. This service is usually available at stores like Apple, Best Buy, Dollar Tree, Home Depot, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Target, Walmart, and more.
Currently, some stores are doing contactless pickup to ensure customers are able to get what they need during the COVID-19 pandemic. Just be sure to check ahead with the store to find out what their pickup guidelines are or whether this service is available.
