Senior smartphone use lags behind that of the younger generations. However, that doesn’t mean seniors can’t get discounts from phone companies. Most seniors are now using cell phones at a similar rate to society’s younger members. And it seems like the phone companies know it. All four major carriers offer discounts to seniors! You may even be able to get a discount you never knew about from your existing carrier!
AT&T: Seniors over 55 can choose from a basic plan specific to flip phones. They can also select a discounted plan that works with any type of phone. The basic plan costs $29.99/line per month. For seniors with smartphones, you can use your AARP membership to receive a 10% discount on any plan.
Consumer Cellular: Get exclusive savings on monthly service charges and accessories with your AARP membership.
Sprint: Sprint’s discount is available to new subscribers over 55. Get unlimited talk, text, and 3G mobile data for $50 for one line or $70 for two. (Usually $60/one line or $100/two.)
T-Mobile: T-Mobile offers a less expensive version of its ONE plan. This gives seniors over 55 unlimited talk, text, and LTE data. It costs $50 for one line and $70 for two (regularly $70 and $120, respectively).
Verizon: Seniors over 55 can get Verizon’s basic unlimited plan (unlimited talk, text, mobile data, and mobile hotspot capability). This plan costs $60/month for one line or $80/month for two lines. Unfortunately, this is only available in certain locations, but it’s a great value if you do qualify.
