Though the holidays are a time to relax and recharge, that doesn’t mean they aren’t busy. Even the new year can feel hectic right away as you head back to work or pack up the decorations and put your home back in order. When it feels like you’ve been busy for weeks on end, free time isn’t just exciting. It’s time that you suddenly have to make the most of. The excitement can quickly give way to feeling stressed over making a decision about what you’re doing with your time. Then before you know it, you’re busy again and you spent all your free time scrolling Facebook.
Obviously, this isn’t ideal. So what can you do instead? Make a “free time activities” list. That way, instead of spending your free time thinking about what you’d like to do, you can just pick one of the activities off the list and get to it. The best part about it is that your free time activities can include anything you want. You could add things that you know are relaxing to you, like starting a book or going on a walk. You could also add things you’ve been meaning to try, like watching a new movie or doing a yoga or pilates class.
The list is your oyster. Just write down activities you enjoy but don’t often have time for. You can also organize your list by time. Grouping activities that take 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes can help you make sure you’re not wasting time choosing an activity. The other important thing to do is to be very specific about how you plan to use your time. That way, you’ll be able to choose an item and make the most of your time. Even if free time catches you by surprise, you’ll be ready!
