By now, you’ve probably heard about the benefits of a healthy diet and exercise. But for many adults, these come with a barrier to entry. For example, economic standing and general lack of knowledge are just two things that can prevent people from joining a gym or preparing healthy, balanced meals.
However, the financial barrier may not be as big of an issue anymore. Why? One in 5 seniors over the age of 65 are eligible for free access to fitness clubs.
What’s the catch? Many seniors don’t know that they’re already receiving free access to fitness clubs. In fact, you might be getting it through your Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement plan.
Healthways, a company based in Tennessee, offers the SilverSneakers program. According to Healthways, 13.4 million seniors are receiving free access to more than 16,000 fitness locations nationwide.
SilverSneakers is included in some AARP plans, as well as Humana, Aetna, and UnitedHealthcare plans. These are just some of the larger companies, but a number of smaller plans also offer SilverSneakers memberships.
Included with this benefit are access to thousands of local gyms, fitness classes, specialized SilverSneakers classes for seniors, and access to any of the amenities the gym has, like saunas and swimming pools.
Plus, if you don’t want to go to the gym every day, SilverSneakers offers apps and outdoor classes that can make exercising more fun.
If you would like to check your eligibility, you can do so at the SilverSneakers website.
